Coast Guard coffee has a reputation for being strong. On a number of different occasions, members of my family, including my husband and myself (who have both served in the Coast Guard) and our younger daughter, have encountered people who swear that Coast Guard coffee is too strong for them. One retired Navy chief petty officer our daughter talked to swore that in the Coast Guard, when the ships run out of diesel fuel, we run them on our coffee. Others swear we used it to swab the teak decks.

I was in the Coast Guard Reserve, and served on an inter-service mobilization planning committee involving the Coast Guard, the Navy, the port of Jacksonville , and the Florida National Guard, among others. A National Guard lieutenant colonel, at the coffee machine, let us know that he could tolerate only one cup of Coast Guard coffee per year.

And our daughter, who was of course raised with Coast Guard-coffee-drinking parents, has been banned from making coffee in three different workplaces because she makes it too strong!
